“The expresses from Dnieper banks” Seven years ago, in July 2002, there took place the event, which has become a token one in the history of railway branch of Ukraine. Thanks to labor efforts of railwaymen and workers of “Kryukov railway car building works” public company, the speeded-up train “Capital express” departed to its first journey by Kharkov-Kiev route thereby notifying the cities and villages about the birth of domestic mechanical engineering branch – passenger railway car building.
This was initiated in 1992, when the problem of Ukrainian railways rolling stock renewal arose with all acuteness. “Kryukov railway car building works” public company was determined as the base enterprise in respect of elaboration and manufacture of products of passenger railway car building by the State program of development of railway transport of Ukraine. The specialists of enterprise and Ukrainian railways went to realization of this project for more than seven years. Having begun the scientific-research and design works, as it is called, from scratch, the specialists of works and “main” railway carrier of the country, being guided by advanced world experience, have determined the main requirements to future passenger railway cars. As a result of long-term laborious work of “KRCBW” PC specialists and undoubtedly owing to support of the head of Ukrainian railways – Giorgiy Kirpa, there had been created in 2001 the first domestic pattern of 61-779 model passenger car of “Ukraine” series, which has been manufactured by 10th anniversary of Independence of Ukraine. The new pattern of car differed favorably from existing analogues by greater passenger capacity (10 instead of 9 compartments), modern design and convenient functional interior. Obligatory automatic air conditioning system, fire alarm and nighttime compartment protection system, sanitary appliances of closed cycle have been offered for the passengers of new Ukrainian cars. The car became safer owing to system of the automatic blocking of entrance doors, which is actuated under more than 5 km/h train motion speed, and self-test system controlling the main parameters of its operation.
Years went by; “Capital expresses” became trains habitual for passengers, without which it is impossible to imagine the passenger traffic in Ukraine.

Using more than 300 cars manufactured by Kryukov railway car builders within the period from 2002 till 2009, there have been marshaled the fast trains working today on directions Kiev-Kharkov, Kiev-Dnepropetrovsk, Kiev-Moscow, Kharkov-Moscow, Kiev-Donetsk, Kiev-Lvov, Kremenchug-Kiev and Kiev-Minsk.
The enterprise specialists have designed and mastered in manufacture 14 various models of railway cars and their modifications, starting from cars with seating places and finishing with sleeping and restaurant cars. Unique designing-technological, manufacturing and testing bases have been created. Passengers of “Dnieper expresses” were able to feel in full the high level of comfort of new Ukrainian cars. To stop at what has been accomplished – against the principles of Kryukov railway car builders. Understanding the fact that modern passenger cars are unique, thoroughly considered products and also taking into account the competition with other types of transport, the works collective sees its top priority tasks in development of the branch and, first of all, in products quality improvement, expansion of model range of cars, their design and interior enhancement, applied equipment range expansion, mastering the new directions in passenger railway car building (creation of electro-diesel trains, underground cars) and conducts its work in close collaboration with Ministry of Transport and Communication, Ukrainian railways, leading scientific-research institutes of Ukraine and Russia.
